Tips for Ordering Corsages and Boutonnieres

Published by sfbuds at 1:14 PM

High school dance season is here. We always get lots of questions about what flowers are popular, if you should match the corsage to the dress, adding ribbons to boutonnieres and what add-ons are available for your dance flowers. Below are some general tips that hopefully help you with the ordering process.

Current Trends:

- The most popular style for homecoming dances is the wrist corsage for the girls and the boutonniere for the guys.

- Popular flowers are sweetheart roses, dendrobium orchids, alstromeria, mini carnations and other small flowers.

- Flowers for your hair or corsages pinned to an evening bag are also choices to consider.

- The staff at Sylvia's can tell you what flower choices and options are available. Photos are featured on the Corsages & More section of our website and are available in our store.

Corsage Ordering Tips:

- Be sure to know the color of the dress or have a swatch available so we can help you pick out a coordinating ribbon.

- If you would like to have special order flowers, such as colored mini-callas or exotic orchid styles, please be sure to order at least two weeks in advance so that we have the time to order the necessary quantities to ensure that you get what you really want.

- The color of the flower does not have to match the color of the dress. We usually recommend to contrast the flower colors with the dress, so that the corsage does not get lost against the dress color.

- We also have a variety of add-on items to make the corsage more memorable. Fancy pearl or rhinestone bracelets, gems, pearl or rhinestone sprays and feathers are all additional items that can be incorporated into the flowers.

- If you would like to leave it up to the designer to pick out flowers and colors to compliment the dress we would be happy to do that, however, if you have a certain color scheme in mind that you would like for us to stick to....please verbalize your thoughts. If nothing is said our corsage designers will choose what they think looks best with the dress color, which may or may not be what you had in mind. So as a rule, it is always best to let us know what colors you would like to see in the final product.

- We know how very important dance flowers are to our young customers and are happy to work with them to make their corsages and boutonnieres special. If you have your heart set on a particular style or flower, there is nothing wrong with letting your date know what you would like. We even suggest coming into the shop together to pick out your flowers.

Boutonniere Ordering Tips:

- Matching the boutonniere to the corsage is becoming a popular trend, but it is not always necessary to do so.

- Boutonnieres are usually created with 1 focal flower, green foliage and some accent flower. If smaller flowers are used such as sweetheart roses more flowers can be used.

- Usually boutonnieres are not as complex as corsages are, but we can add a ribbon sash to coordinate with the corsage or dress color.
